Rwanda Steering Committee
The Western Heads East Project has worked with communities in Mwanza, Tanzania and Oyugis, Kenya, to establish community kitchen operations for the production of Fiti, a probiotic yogurt developed at The University of Western Ontario, Canada.
The probiotic yogurt confers health benefits that build nutrition, strengthen immunity, and improve the quality of life for people living with AIDS as well as those who are malnourished.
The goal of Western Heads East is to work with key community partners and women's groups to make the probiotic yogurt accessible to as many people as possible, and to evaluate the health benefits throughout East Africa.
Host organizations in Rwanda and Uganda have expressed interest in establishing probiotic yogurt operations in the near future. At this time, Western Heads East is planning for three interns to travel to Rwanda for an exploratory visit.
The interns will gauge interest and readiness in Kigali for key community stakeholders to develop a Steering Committee and to identify women's groups to set up a community kitchen operation with the necessary infrastructure and suppliers.
